    About this tour: Lake District

    Lake district

A journey through mountains, hills, forests and lakes: discover Lake District!

The Lake District National Park is an incredibly beautiful park in the northwest of England, rightfully listed as a World Heritage Site. The landscape features mountains, hills, forests, and numerous lakes, all of which reflect the stunning scenery. Alongside the many charming villages and towns, country estates, castles, gardens, and smaller parks, it's a delightful region to explore.

The price of this trip does not include ferry crossings, but we would be happy to make those reservations for you, if needed. The advantage of this is that you will receive a discount on the ferry prices and can travel worry-free. You can indicate your interest in this option in the comments section during the booking process, and we will provide you with a proposal.

Please note: due to Brexit, a valid passport is mandatory for travel to the United Kingdom.

The route to the ferry and from the ferry to your home is on your own initiative. If you live in England, Ireland or Scotland the route to the starting point in Newcastle is also on your own initiative.

    Day route 1: Newcastle โ€“ Windermere | 182 km

The first part of the route takes you out of the busy city of Newcastle via the highway. At km stand 24 you leave Newcastle and almost immediately continue the route via country roads. You will then pass Harlow Hill, where you can see part of Hadrian's Wall. After about 50 km of driving you will pass the River North Tyne. You will also find numerous old English castles, churches and estates along the route. The hotel is located a few hundred meters near Lake Windemere. The lake has a length of over 18 km, a width of 1.5 km and a water surface of no less than 14.7 km². It is the largest natural lake in England. It is a so-called “ribbon” lake.

Day route 2: Coniston Water | 202 km

Today, you will start by heading south from the lake and continue your journey towards Ulverston Channel. In the late afternoon, you will return to this point to drive back to the hotel in the opposite direction. Just before entering Ulverston town, you will spot the John Barrow Hoad Hill Monument on your right, on the hill. This monument was made in 1850. The scenery along this route is truly impressive, with lush green hills and expansive vistas. At kilometer marker 67, follow the route to the left to make a loop. This route will take you along a stunning, winding path beside "Wast Water" and the Irish Sea coast. The views are breathtaking, and the serenity is delightful to experience. It's a wonderful place to take a moment to appreciate the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding area. Between kilometer markers 67 and 68, you have the opportunity to visit the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway at the Eskdale Green Railway station. Steam trains still operate here, fitting in perfectly with the English landscape. During the summer season, the trains arrive here every 40 minutes. Afterward, you'll continue your journey towards the Hardknott Pass, which has a steep gradient of 30%.

Day route 3: Derwent Water | 194 km

The first part of today's route is the same as yesterday's. After Windermere Lake, you'll head almost immediately north along a beautiful, winding, and tranquil road. Along this road lies the very small village of Rusland, a unique name for a place in the heart of England. You will drive through the Grizedale Valley and Grizedale Forest. At kilometer marker 36, you will pass the northernmost point of Lake Windermere. Today's route will take you along the following six lakes: Rydal Water, Grasmere, Thirimere, Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite Lake, and Ullswater. This scenic and winding route includes the Whinlatter Pass and Kirkstone Pass, among others.

    Day route 4: Scotland | 291 km

Today, you can once again relish the beautiful nature of the Lake District. The route for today will take you through the Lake District and into Scotland. Passing through the well-known towns of Lockerbie and Langholm, you briefly ''touch'' Scotland. You will head north through the Ullswater Lake. Just before leaving the Lake District National Park, you will approach the city of Penrith. After Penrith, the route veers to the right, avoiding the capital city of Cumbria, Carlisle. Of course, you can choose to visit this historic Roman city by cutting a part of the route. Then, you will continue the journey towards Lockerbie, with a winding and undulating road that takes you to Langholm. In Langholm, you'll pass by several typical English arch bridges. The route then leads through the Kielder Forest Park, following winding and undulating roads to return to the Lake District. During the final part of the route, you will pass through the city of Kendal, one of the largest cities on the edge of the Lake District.

    Day route 5: Winderemere โ€“ Newcastle | 204 km

Today, you are embarking on the last part of your journey. You will be leaving the Lake District today, but not before savoring the beautiful vistas one more time. You will have plenty of opportunities for stops along the way. Today's route takes you through the Lake District National Park and brushes past the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As you pass through Appleby-in-Westmoreland, you will notice the castle of the same name on your right. Along the way, you will also come across several quintessential English towns where English history is still evident everywhere. Towards the end of the route, you will encounter the High Force and Low Force Falls. These are impressive waterfalls that are certainly worth a visit. Afterward, you will make your way to Newcastle. You can plan your return journey from Newcastle as you wish. Either you take a ferry to Ijmuiden (The Netherlands) or go down south.
