This area is a green oasis. Beautiful forests, lovely rivers and clear streams and lakes make this low mountain range an oasis of greenery and peace.
A particularly beautiful part of nature in Westerwald
Westerwald lies like a green lung between Cologne and Frankfurt. The area mainly attracts hikers, but it is also great for motorcyclists. With the routes we have mapped out for you, you will get to know the wonderful nature. You will pass many quiet farming villages. The people don't let themselves be hurried by work stress or ringing mobile phones. The many beautiful green areas also invite you to slow down. This makes it the ideal environment if you are in need of a few days' rest yourself.
The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.
Day route 1 | Westerwald - South | 237 / 314 km
Today, you can choose between a long or short route that takes you to the southern part of the Westerwald region via beautiful roads. After about 40 kilometres you will pass the Wiesensee reservoir. You will drive through several villages, pass under an old railway bridge and pass the village of Meudt. After Meudt, you cross the highway and drive on a very nice road until Nassau. Not only the bends, but also the views are very nice here. After about 100 kilometres, you will see a large castle towering above the village of Braubach. In this region, you will also regularly come across brown signs with the name Unesco, which is not without reason, as you will find numerous places marked as historical. The last part of the route is a bit busier, but the roads meander and are strung together in a beautiful varied landscape of forests, meadows and villages.
Day route 2 | Westerwald - West | 284 / 343 km
Today you will explore the west of Westerwald. Pretty soon, you will find yourself on nice and narrow winding roads. You will pass several villages, old castles and many campsites. You now come to the lively town of Bad Honnef, nice to have a lunch or coffee stop here. You leave this nice village and continue along the Rhine back to Westerwald. After approximately 200 kilometres, you will see the Wiehaltsperre on your right. With 31.5 million m³ capacity and a water surface area of 2.2 km², it is a large reservoir. The area around the Wiehaltsperre is very popular with hikers. In the last part of the route, you will be treated to yet another delightful curvy path.
Day route 3 | Westerwald - North / East | 268 / 322 km
Today, you can also choose between a long or short route that takes you along beautiful roads into the countryside. After about 50 kilometres, you will pass by Schloss Crottorf. The first mention of this castle goes back to the year 1261. The route continues into the countryside and you pass the larger towns of Erndtebrück and Bad Berleburg. After this, you can enjoy the winding roads. The last part of the route still takes you on beautiful roads through the Rothaar mountains, after which it is another 40 kilometres to the hotel, with certainly have nice curvy roads.
