Peace, beautiful roads, great hotels, breathtaking landscapes, spacious and overwhelming nature. Discover it all in southern Norway!
Norway has incredibly pure and varied nature. The gentle and rugged landscapes come together here. The gigantic mountains, glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, fast-flowing rivers, roaring waterfalls, blooming valleys, and countless fjords make a deep impression. You won't be the first to fall in love with this impressive country. This tour takes you to the most beautiful places in the south and along the most delightful roads. It's truly a pleasure to drive here, and you'll experience it for yourself.
The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative. It is important that you will be in Hirtshals on the first day of your trip. From here we organise the trip further.
Day route 01: Jørpeland | 250 km
In the morning, you will take the ferry from Hirtshals (Denmark) to Kristiansand (Norway). The ferry departs around 10:00 in the morning and the crossing takes about 3.5 hours. When you get off the ferry, your roundtrip through beautiful Norway begins. The first route is only 250 km. From Kristiansand, you will drive to Jørpeland in southwestern Norway. You will stay here for two nights to climb the stunning Preikestolen or to drive fantastically around it.
Day route 02: Preikestolen | 205 km
You can choose from two different routes through the Lysefjord on this day. The first route takes you to the famous Preikestolen cliff, where you will go on a challenging but stunning 5-hour hike in total. This route is a total of 18km long. We hope you don't have a fear of heights when you reach the top of Preikestolen!
The second option is to stay on your bike and take three ferries on this day trip, allowing you to see the beauty of nature from a completely different perspective. We recommend a coffee break at the Eagle's Nest, just before the second ferry in the town of Lysebøtn. Then, you will drive on a delightful road with 32 hairpin bends over 8km to reach the fjord. Here, you will board the ferry that takes you under the Preikestolen and sails to Lauvvik. From there, you will take one more ferry to quickly arrive at the hotel for a refreshing shower.
Please note that the ferry sailing under the Preikestolen operates only between May and mid-August.
Day route 03: Jørpeland to Bergen | 345 / 386 km
You drive from Jørpeland to Bergen. During this route, you will make several ferry crossings and drive past a double waterfall and Norway's fruit garden. There is also a choice between a short and long route for this route, so everyone can make it a perfect day. The many panoramic views, beautiful fjords, and multiple ferry crossings make day route 3 the ultimate Norway day. You can choose to visit Bergen in the afternoon after this trip or save the visit for the next morning.
Day route 04: Bergen to Loen | 313 / 443 km
You continue your journey in a northern direction towards Loen. Once again, there are two routes available for today, where the long route is definitely worth the extra kilometers. On the long route, you follow the Sognefjord for 135km. This fjord keeps surprising you with its length and the fact that it is quite narrow, which keeps providing stunning views. This is a beautiful route through the magnificent Norwegian fjord landscape with cool blue lakes, flowing rivers, and high mountains. At the end of the day, you arrive in Loen, where a very nice hotel has been reserved for you.
Day route 05: Loen to Molde | 230 km
This route is full of highlights. On the way to the village of Geiranger, you will be impressed by the pure beauty of nature. Before reaching the Geirangerfjord, you can drive up to the Dalsnibba plateau. From there, you have an unparalleled view of the cruise ships, which look like rowing boats due to the great distance. The Geirangerfjord itself is a delight. It is one of the most beautiful fjords, known for its magnificent waterfalls with striking names such as the 'Suitor' and the 'Bridal Veil'. You will take the ferry to the Trollstigen, which has beautiful viewpoints. The endpoint is the rose city of Molde, one of the most beautiful places in Norway.
Day route 06: Molde to Trondheim | 339 km
Today, you will leave to go to Trondheim, a major port city and the last city before reaching the Arctic Circle. On the way, you will drive on the world-famous and beloved Atlantic Road. Take your time for this gem, it is absolutely worth it! The bridges that you drive consecutively here are breathtakingly beautiful. In addition to the Atlantic Road, there are also some beautiful winding roads in the route today, so that the variation in roads and landscapes is in perfect balance. The hotel in Trondheim, where you will stay for two nights, is located near the city center and has helpful staff.
Day 07: Rest day or tour day | 349 km
You can plan this day according to your own preferences. If you feel like you've done enough driving in the past few days, you can explore Trondheim or simply relax in the hotel and recover from all the experiences. For those who can't get enough of driving through the beautiful and ever-changing Norway, we have a special round trip planned for you. You will drive in a large loop around the Trondheimfjord and Beitstadfjord, where the landscape becomes increasingly barren and the mountains flatter. At the end of the day, you will take a ferry back to Trondheim. Absolutely stunning!
Day route 08: Trondheim to Lom | 329 / 302 (unpaved) km
You continue your journey towards Lom in the southern direction. Here, you have the option to take the regular 329km route or the off-road route of 302km with 30km of unpaved road. It is easily doable and adds an extra dimension to driving in Norway. During the route, you will see the landscape gradually transform into an even more raw and pure environment. After experiencing all the rapids and other highlights, you will arrive in Lom. This city is known for its wooden stave church and visitor center. Visiting this wooden stave church is definitely worth it.
Day route 9: Lom to Myrkdalen | 347 km
Today will be an unforgettable route to Myrkdalen. You will drive along and over fjords and can visit Europe's largest glacier on the way: Jostedalsbreen. Then you drive over the high plateau via the Aurlandsvegn to Aurland. This is a beautiful alternative to avoid Norway's largest tunnel. With a few hairpin bends, even lovers of winding roads will enjoy this route. Just a few kilometers further you will pass through the village of Flåm. This village is surrounded by an incredibly impressive environment of steep mountains, narrow valleys, and cascading waterfalls. The train ride through the rugged landscape here will certainly be memorable. After Flåm, you will quickly pass Stalheim. We have added an extra loop in the route here because of a beautiful waterfall and Norway's steepest descent; the bends are so sharp that you can read your own license plate! Then it's on to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Day route 10: Myrkdalen to Byglandsfjord | 411 km
Today you start your last full day in Norway. This is still quite a long route in terms of kilometers. As you have experienced by now, the kilometers in Norway are easy and smooth to drive, and if you leave on time, this is no problem at all. The route today is also a nice mix of smaller and beautiful roads around the tunnels and the more main roads. This way it never gets boring, but you can still enjoy a relaxing ride. It is definitely recommended to stop for a quick bite during the route. Most gas stations in Norway prepare delicious homemade burgers for a good price. The stretch along the Sørfjorden is still exceptionally beautiful and remains so all day until the hotel, which is directly located by the water.
Day route 11: Byglandsfjord to Kristiansand | 95 kilometres
The round trip is almost over. Only a short 100km drive back to the Kristiansand port. You will drive back to Kristiansand via a beautiful route. Until the very last moment in Norway, it feels so pure and clean. In the afternoon, you are expected at the Kristiansand port so that you can catch the ferry to Denmark on time. You will arrive in Hirtshals at the beginning of the evening and spend the night in this Danish town where you stayed for a night at the beginning of the trip. Here, you can load your motorcycle right away in the evening if you came by car or bus.
Day route 12: Back route
The next morning you drive back home after a good night in Hirtshals. Do you want to leave early? Then a packed lunch can be prepared for you to take on the road. No matter where you are from and how many kilometers you have to drive back home, the routes of Norway will be on your mind! You won't forget this trip to the south of Norway easily!
