Day route 1: Malaga, Spain | 169 km
You'll fly in the morning from an airport of your choice to the sunny city of Malaga. Here, you'll pick up your BMW motorcycle from Hertz Ride. You'll start right away with a short day route (169 km) to the hotel. The first few kilometers take you through Malaga on smooth roads before leaving it behind and heading into the mountains. After just 20 km, you'll get a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea from the mountains. You'll pass several reservoirs (known as "Embalse" in Spanish) and cross the Natural Park "Sierras de Tejeda Almijara Alhama." At the end of this ride, you'll arrive at the hotel, where you can take a refreshing dip in the pool and enjoy a drink under the Spanish sun. This will give you the ultimate relaxing holiday feeling and a fantastic week of riding ahead.
Day route 2: Sierra Nevada & Mulhacen | 238 / 296 / 319 km
After a Spanish breakfast, you'll start with a route around and through the Mulhacen. With its height of 3,482m, this mountain is the highest peak on the Spanish mainland. Today, you'll have the choice between a short, long, and XL route. The routes go around the Mulhacen, and the long and XL routes even go back and forth to the highest point of the Sierra Nevada mountain pass (2,400m). It's a challenging and excellent road to ride, and it's right at the beginning of the route. Make sure to bring an extra layer of clothing as the temperature on top of the Sierra Nevada can drop to below 10 degrees. The view from above is stunning, with Granada in the distance. You'll ride almost the same way down, where it's worth stopping at a Mirador.
After the Sierra Nevada, you'll ride through a beautiful gorge with many nice bends, leading to the azure blue Embalse de Quentar. From the gorge, the route continues along the 500-year-old Castillo de la Cahorra, which you can see from afar. Through several charming Spanish towns, you'll continue south to ride on the south side of the Mulhacen. Here, the short and long routes take the winding and undulating roads that take you through the Spanish countryside. If you're a true bend lover, you can choose the XL route. Note that this route has a stretch of dozens of kilometers with continuous bends. Along the way, you'll pass through typical and unique Spanish villages such as Trevelez and Pampaneira. In Pampaneira, you'll find a small chocolate factory with a shop that is a "must" for chocolate lovers.
After a beautiful and challenging route, you'll take the fastest way back to the hotel, bypassing Granada. If you're taking the short route, you'll have plenty of time to walk around the center of Granada since dinner in Spain is usually served later in the evening.
Day route 3: Granada-Cordoba | 231 / 291 / 308 km
On this day, you'll ride to Cordoba, the city where you can definitely see the Moorish influence from bygone times. The Moors left many traces during their time in Andalusia, and you see it everywhere and still taste it in the culture here in southern Spain. Cordoba is the oldest known city in the current civilized world and the center of Moorish Spain. Reason enough to stay here for two days.
The route is characterized by the many extensive olive groves. It's almost impressive to see how many olive trees are present here. Again, there are three possibilities for the length of the route today. If you want to see and visit more along the way or in Cordoba, choose the short route. If you like more driving and sightseeing or a mix of both, you can choose the long or XL route.
You'll leave Granada behind on smooth roads and drive into the mountains from the flat landscape. The view from the road up is phenomenal and especially good to see from one of the Miradors. After one of the winding roads through the mountains, you'll come across the beautiful village of Montefrio. You'll see more of these villages during this trip. The Iglesia is located at the highest point of the village, and the houses are scattered around it to the valley, all painted white. After Montefrio, the route heads towards the Parque Natural Sierras Subbéticas. The short route touches the natural park, and the long and XL routes make an extra loop through it. The landscape is vast and deserted, and the roads alternate from winding to rolling. Enjoying the ride on the motorbike, often surrounded by olive and almond trees. The intensity of these trees increases as you approach Cordoba. Olive trees as far as you can see, sometimes marked by a row of palm trees. Then suddenly, there is the large and ancient city of Cordoba.
Day route 4: Round trip Sierra de Hornachuelos | 240 / 316 km
Today, a tour is waiting for you through the Hornachuelos National Park. Alternatively, you can choose to explore Cordoba instead. If you take the short route, you may even be able to do both.
The route starts right through the city towards the mountains and the national park. Once out of Cordoba, you can immediately get into the rhythm of the bends through the forested area. Along the route, you'll encounter little traffic and occasionally a Spanish village to stop for coffee or lunch, such as Azuaga, where you can enter the village and take a coffee break on the square in front of the church. The route is highly varied in terms of roads and bends. Many wild animals still live in the park, such as large vultures and eagles. You'll also see the "black pigs" walking around, which are kept for the famous Iberico ham. The pigs have large areas of land at their disposal, and if you have food for them, they'll come to you in large numbers (quite impressive).
Almost at the end of the route, just outside Cordoba, lies the fairytale Moorish palace city of Medina Azahara with beautiful remains from the 10th century. The last kilometers are driven back to the hotel via a smooth road.
Day route 5: Cordoba-Sevilla | 247 / 337 km
Today's route offers a short or long option to the capital of Andalusia: Seville. Centuries ago, this city served as the gathering place for all the riches that Spaniards brought from all over the world, and you can see that reflected in the impressive buildings of the city. The city center is vast and well worth exploring before or after dinner. The first part of the route goes through the Sierra de Hornachuelos, where you will be driving a portion of yesterday's route in the opposite direction, providing a totally different view of this beautiful area. Winding roads combined with stunning views remain one of the main ingredients of this journey.
After many turns, you will enter the Park Natural Sierra Norte. In this park, the landscape changes constantly. Green valleys and rolling hills are interspersed with forests and rivers. You'll drive past old forts and castles and fascinating small white villages as you continue your journey to Seville. However, due to the countless turns on this road, you'll have little time to look around. The last part of the route goes smoothly to Seville over the flat landscape, marked by towering high towers in the landscape. The last kilometers take you through the city to the hotel. Because you'll be driving further into the city, you'll have the opportunity in the afternoon and evening to explore the impressive Seville, including the grand Cathedral and the Plaza de España.
Day route 6: Seville - Sotogrande | 269 / 343 km
You leave Seville behind on smooth roads and head back towards Gibraltar. Along the way, the flat landscape gives way to rolling hills as you make your way towards the Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema. As you cross the dam of Embalse de Zahara El Castor, you approach the stunning white mountain village of Zahara. The village seems to be stuck to the Sierra del Jaral mountain, towering high above the turquoise reservoir. You continue along the road, which starts to resemble an Italian mountain pass more and more, and reach an altitude of 1,100 meters. For dozens of kilometers, you follow the Puerto de las Palomas with an infinite number of bends, each time with a recurring view of the reservoir. In the characteristic village of Grazalema, you can stop for lunch and enjoy the small, lively, and touristy town.
Then you enter the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, which leads you towards the coast. This area also seems completely deserted, and you may feel like the only driver on the road, with an occasional car passing by. You also pass through Los Angeles, which has nothing in common with its American namesake, and continue southward to Sotogrande. The hotel is located on a golf resort where you can also enjoy some leisure time. Those who want to see Gibraltar can continue driving for a bit longer, but be aware that you will need to pass through the border post and the runway of the local airport, as you are entering and leaving Great Britain.
Day route 7: Sotogrande - Malaga | 227 / 312 km
The last ride takes you back to the beautiful city of Malaga. You first follow the coastline before heading back into the mountains. Once again, you'll see stunning views and drive on beautiful winding roads with occasional small white villages. From the mountain roads, you'll drive to Ronda, a city known for its impressive bridges. It's worth an extra stop to see the breathtaking gorge and its impressive bridges. After Ronda, you have the opportunity to visit Setenil de las Bodegas and make a stop there. The houses and shops are built into the overhanging cliff face, which is a remarkable sight. From here, you continue through nature towards Malaga, passing through El Chorro with the Caminito del Rey, a walk through a canyon that was built years ago against the canyon wall.
The route remains beautiful all the way to Malaga, just as you have experienced throughout this entire week. Upon arrival in Malaga, you say goodbye to the fantastic BMW motorcycle. In the last hotel of your trip, you can enjoy the sun with a cold beer.
Day 8: Back home
Today is the day when you will fly back home. Firstly, you will have time for a delightful breakfast at the hotel. Afterward, you can leisurely pack your things and head towards the airport. In the afternoon, you will catch your return flight, where you can think about the wonderful memories of the trip while on the plane.
