Motorcycling in Tyrol-Carinthia offers breathtaking alpine routes and scenic landscapes, providing an exhilarating experience for riders.
Austria is an incredibly popular travel destination in our program, and it's not hard to see why. The mountains are stunning, the views are breathtaking, and the roads are delightful. Additionally, the landscapes with vast plains, rolling hills, and characteristic villages are gorgeous. Or, perhaps it's our secret ingredient that takes you to Italy and Slovenia that makes it so appealing. After all, those countries are entirely different worlds.
The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.
Day route 1: Stallersattel | 211 / 330 km
Today's route takes you to the Stallersattel Pass. First, you'll drive through a quiet road to Lienz, passing through a river valley. After a few kilometers, you'll reach the highest point of the Stallersattel, which is located at the Austria-Italy border. Here, you'll have a magnificent view of the Obersee/Passo Stalle. Continuing the route, you'll arrive in Brixen/Bressanone. This larger city is definitely worth a visit, as it's the oldest city in Italian South Tyrol. It's delightful to wander through the old town and enjoy the beautiful cathedrals, cozy streets, and authentic buildings. After Brixen/Bressanone, you'll drive up the Strade della Plose, where the curves link together again. The wooded area alternates with views of the mountain peaks of the Dolomites. Finally, you'll return to the hotel by driving the route in the opposite direction.
Day route 2: Grossglockner | 327 km
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is 48 kilometers long with 36 hairpin bends, and the highest pass point is at 2,504 meters. You'll drive towards the Grossglockner via Lienz. The route runs via the Edelweisspitze, which is a road with steep hairpin bends made of cobblestones. You'll go up and down towards Zell am See. Zell am See is a true winter sports town with 77 kilometers of slopes. This place is very focused on tourism both in summer and winter. The route then continues via Saalfelden and back towards Zell am See before heading back to the hotel via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
Day route 3: Italy | 229 / 348 km
Today's route is very impressive and takes you to Italy to get a little taste of the Dolomites. The first part of the route runs via the "Karnische Dolomitenstrasse". It's a winding route that unfortunately has some stretches of bad road over the first 40 kilometers. The route continues towards Drautal, and you'll pass the Austrian-Italian border. Here, the route runs along the foothills of the impressive Dolomite Mountains and through the Dolomites National Park, a truly magical moment to drive through. You'll continue the route and drive up to Sella Ciampigotto (1,790m). The bends and magnificent views continue to follow each other here. Afterward, you'll continue on a beautiful winding road through the valley to eventually head north again and return to the hotel in Austria via the Nassfeld Pass (1,552m). Along the way, you can take a cable car to the top of one of the mountains you pass at various points on the route.
Day route 4: Slovenia | 285 / 334 / 367 km
You will drive from the hotel towards the Italian village of Pontebba. After about 90 kilometers, you will cross the Italian-Slovenian border. Then you will drive through "Kransjka Gora" towards the Vrsic Pass, which has 50 hairpin bends. After this pass, you will mainly drive through and along beautiful river valleys in the Triglav National Park. This area is beautiful and impressive, and unlike the Austrian mountain regions, it is incredibly wooded. Slovenia is one of the most wooded countries in Europe, and the Triglav National Park consists of approximately 56,000 hectares of forest. You will continue the route towards Austria and arrive at the Weissensee, a mountain lake that is approximately 12 kilometers long. On a clear day, you will have a spectacular view of the water. The remaining part of the route follows a main road alternating with winding roads and typical Austrian villages until you reach the hotel.
Day route 5: Nockalmstrasse | 262 / 323 km
Today's route starts with a delightful winding road towards Oberdrauburg and Spittal. The Spittal area is well-known for the Millstätter See, a lake situated at an altitude of 588 meters, with a length of 12 kilometers and an average depth of 89 meters. Continuing on the route, after approximately 100 kilometers, you will arrive at the toll gate for the Nockalmstrasse. While driving up the pass, on the right side, you will come across a restaurant which is very popular among motorcyclists. Additionally, you have the opportunity to take a beautiful walk through the alpine meadow amidst the cows. Afterward, you drive down the Nockalmstrasse to return to the hotel.
Additional route for the enthusiast | 125 km
If you have finished your dayroute early and still want to enjoy a nice ride and beautiful surroundings, then this extra route through Lesachtal is definitely recommended. The route takes you around the Lienz Dolomites, which consist of limestone and have a highest point of about 2000 meters. While driving this route, you will be treated to stunning views time and time again, combined with great winding roads.
