Curves, forests and history. Fantastic steering through this beautiful area on the border of former East Germany!
The Harz region is really wonderful with its mountains, rock formations, hills, caves, forests, lakes, rivers, clear streams and rich fauna. Also beautiful, are the lovely villages and towns, castles and fortresses and old narrow gauge railways and mines. Yet it is the roads that really make this holiday great. You drive curve after curve and turn after turn!
The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.
Day route 1: Torfhuis | 251 / 321 km
This route has for the most part lovely roads full of bends, you will pass an old mine shaft, but unfortunately it cannot be visited. The road rises here with a percentage up to 15% and there are many hairpin bends. The route now continues towards perhaps the most special city in the Harz: Goslar. This city is not on the World Heritage List for nothing, Goslar has a beautiful historic centre and is definitely worth a visit! You continue the route towards Bad Harzberg and you pass the Radau Wasserfall, a large granite rock in the river 'Radau' of 24 metres high. Just before Bartolfelde, you will see an old guard tower on the right, as you cross the former border with East/West Germany. You now return to the hotel along a winding road.
Day route 2: National Park Harz & Brocken | 265 / 352 km
Today's route takes you to the National Park Harz. The main sights you will pass by on this route are: The Rapbodetalsperre, Stolberg and the Kyffhauser National Park.
The route first goes through Duderstadt and then continues on to Friedrichsrode, where you will see the old unrestored style of German half-timbered houses. The route continues to Sonderhausen, if you have enough time it is nice to walk through this town and visit the castle. After Sonderhausen, the road briefly slopes through the landscape, only to change into a curvy circuit.
Day route 3: Bad Lauterbach | 274 / 381 km
The first part of the route takes you in the direction of Duderstadt, passing through the city and into a beautiful hilly area. The first set of hairpin bends can be found immediately after a few kilometres. The route avoids the small roads as much as possible and takes you through the Thuringian area on predominantly smaller roads. You can deviate from the route here to visit the deserted Burg Gleichenstein, which can be reached by motorbike almost up to the castle and which dates back to 1180. The route now continues south of the castle to Martinfeld. It's great steering on this woody road! The great steering continues for a while, but becomes very bumpy at a certain point, despite the new asphalt. You continue the route and you arrive at the Gaußturm. You can climb this high tower, after which you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the surroundings. There is also a restaurant for a drink and/or lunch. After the tower, there is a nice route to the historic village of Lödingsen. The route continues to meander through the area with changing views and a nice variety of bends. You are now back in the Harz area. It is still nice to ride in these surroundings. You now arrive at Clausthal-Zellerfeld, a lively mountain town where you should definitely stop, as this town consists of remarkable buildings and a real historic town centre.
This day route is only for the 5-day trip.
