Driving over the peaks between Spain and France. Enjoying the Spanish sun and delightful winding roads through the Pyrenees.
What a delightful area to explore by motorbike! All the ingredients for an amazing motorbike vacation can be found in the Pyrenees: the lovely Spanish sun, beautiful roads, and breathtaking scenery that looks different after every turn. To make this trip complete, we have prepared fantastic routes for you and arranged accommodations at two hotels in Jaca and Prullans.
Upon arrival at the modern 4-star hotel in Prullans, you will see that we we're not exaggerating. This hotel, located in the valley of the Pyrenees, has spacious rooms with a beautiful view of the high mountains. You can park your motorcycle safely in a secure garage. You can also enjoy the spa facilities and indulge in the delicious Spanish cuisine every evening. You will stay here for four days. The second hotel is located in the picturesque town of Jaca. This town has a rich history, and there are many historic buildings worth visiting in the medieval center. During your stay in Jaca, you will not dine at the hotel. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Jaca.
The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.
Day route 1: High Pyrenees | 340 km
It is recommended to leave early today. If it is hot, bring enough water because it will be a long route. Today we will ride along the highest mountain in the Pyrenees: Pico Aneto (3,404m). The first 80 km will take you along a beautiful winding road that you will ride the opposite direction at the end of the day. From the other side, you will have completely different impressions! After driving up and down a pass of 1,721 meters, you will come across Panta de la Torrassa, a reservoir built in 1955 to provide consumption and irrigation opportunities for the surrounding agriculture. Further on, there are some nice towns for a coffee or lunch break. Then you will enter a five-kilometer-long tunnel with 1,500 meters of rock above you. It's an impressive sight as you drive through it! You will then ride along winding roads to Colle de la Creu de Perves (1,335m). From there, you will return to the hotel.
Day route 2: Pre Pyrenees | 238 / 346 / 384 km
Today you have the choice between three route lengths, ranging from 5 to 8 hours of riding. The routes will take you through the Catalan Wild Pre-Pyrenees, where four different species of vultures breed, and you're likely to encounter them. It's an impressive sight when you see their shadow over the road ahead. Today's route follows quiet and winding roads. There aren't many places to eat along the way, so be prepared and don't wait too long before stopping. Halfway through the route, you'll come across the larger city of Solsona, which has an old cathedral. It's a nice place for a short stop or to take a walk. From there, you'll ride back on winding roads, including some hairpin turns.
Day route 3: Andorra | 276 / 334 km
The hotel is located not far from the small taxfree state of Andorra and the road there happens to be very enjoyable to ride. It's a great place to shop and to fill up your tank for a better price. After just 40 kilometers, you'll already be in Andorra, and after crossing two passes, you'll enter the French Pyrenees. You'll pass several beautiful passes: Col de Marmare (1,361m), Col d'en Ferret (1,421m), Col du Chioula (1,431m), Port de Pailhères (2,001m). After that, you can choose to take the longer route by adding a loop of 50 km, or return to the hotel.
Day route 4: Prulans - Jaca | 356 km
After breakfast, you will pack your belongings and go on a six-hour ride to the next hotel in Jaca, a nice center where you can visit an old fort about a 20-minute walk away. It's definitely worth doing for an evening. Enjoy the last hours in Spain today as you pass through the province of Aragón. This is a very thinly populated area where you hardly come across any tourists. At kilometer 160, you will come across a monastery that dates back to the 9th century. A beautiful place to stretch your legs. You will drive to France along a winding road that was also included in the Spanish Vuelta tour. Along the way, there is a place where you can walk to a waterfall. The last kilometers are straight to the next hotel, where you can rest from the many bends of today.
Day route 5: Pierre St. Martin | 218 / 272 km
Today is a shorter route with enough time to stop or to return to the hotel early. You will be driving through the Parc National des Pyrénées, where you will wind through canyons and along rugged rocks. Here, you'll encounter an abandoned train track that crosses the road in places. First, you'll continue further into France before turning back towards the border with Spain. You'll encounter a series of mountain passes on this route, which are among the most beautiful in the region. Be careful of livestock and their droppings in the corners. You'll pass through several villages at the foot of the last mountain pass on your way back.
Day route 6: Arneguy | 203 / 338 km
Today is the last route of the week. A beautiful route awaits you today with many bends on smooth asphalt. You wind high up into the mountains, leaving the inhabited world far behind. The view is well worth it. The cols that will still be ridden today are Col d'Asquéta (846m), Col d'Arthé (937m), Col d'Elhursaro (1,152m), Col Héganzo (1,118m). The French sure know how to make beautiful roads! This is already the last day of the trip.
